If you ask people what their favorite holiday is, the answers range from Thanksgiving, to Christmas, to their birthdays.  I have never heard anyone respond with “My favorite holiday is Mother’s Day.”

Honestly, Everyday should be Mother’s Day. I cannot think of a more important job than being a mom.  And, it is a job – with long hours, no pay, no vacations, and often unappreciated.

However, hands down, it is one of the most rewarding jobs.  Ask any mom, myself included, the pride they felt finding out they were pregnant. At that time, our lives were elevated to an immeasurable peak.

Mother’s Day From A Psychological Perspective 

Let’s look at how the bond with your mom made you who you are.

To begin with, if it weren’t for your mom, you wouldn’t be breathing right now.  If nothing else, you should thank her for that.

Not to mention the fact that even, in utero, your mom was looking out for you, providing you with a safe environment and nourishment you needed to thrive.  So, it is from the very beginning that your mom played a key role in helping to enhance your wellbeing.

By providing a loving, nurturing and secure environment while you were growing up, she helped you look beyond yourself to the world around you and to form lasting bonds.  Your mom comforted you, cared for you, and provided support when you needed it.  She helped you to embrace your future.

And, she always forgave you, no matter what.

Mother’s Day Can Be Humorous

If you are lucky, from time to time, your children will grace you with humor.  We know that children try to express their feelings in the best ways they know how, but sometimes it just doesn’t come our right.  The following are things my daughters wrote to me on Mother’s Day cards.  Here goes….

Younger daughter, age 5: “When I grow up, I want to be like my Mommy. She is the best Mommy I ever had.  She’s smart, kind, and let’s my Daddy do the cooking.  Sometimes she gets frantic.”

Older daughter, age 7:  “Happy Mother’s Day from your favorite child.”

As grown women, they signed one Mother’s Day card the following way: “How did we get so lucky to have you as our mom?”

If you are wondering what to give your mom for Mother’s Day, take the time to thank her.
